Basketball in Brno has never had a natural city rival to match the weight of its own past — the closest thing to a grudge match runs against BK Opava and Basketball Olomouc, fellow Moravian sides, though locals reserve the phrase "Brno derby" for the university and women's game rather than for PUMPA. That absence says something: the club spent decades measuring itself not against neighbours but against Real Madrid and Crvena zvezda.

The team playing today under the PUMPA sponsor name was registered in 2012, after the previous top-flight entity, Basketball Brno, collapsed in 2011. It carries forward the record of a much older club, founded in 1926 and known in turn as Spartak ZJŠ Brno and then Zbrojovka Brno, which became the dominant force in Czechoslovak basketball. Between 1946 and 1990 that side took 21 Czechoslovak League titles, then added three more in the newly independent Czech league in 1994, 1995 and 1996. Its European runs went further than any Czech club has managed since: finals of the FIBA European Champions Cup in 1964 and 1968, both lost to Real Madrid, a Cup Winners' Cup final against Crvena zvezda in 1974, and a FIBA Intercontinental Cup final in 1969, lost to the Akron Goodyear Wingfoots. Players from that stretch, among them František Konvička and the Bobrovský brothers, are still the names attached to the club's best years.

The current side plays at the STAREZ Aréna Vodova, holding 2,900, and its clearest recent mark came in 2022, a bronze medal in the European North Basketball League. Between the last Czechoslovak title in 1990 and that bronze lies a gap the club has not closed: no championship since the mid-1990s, and nothing yet in Europe to place alongside the finals its predecessor reached twice against Real Madrid.
