Ystrad Mynach on matchday usually means Cwrt Rawlin or Machen across the pitch, the two names that turn an ordinary Saturday into a derby for Caerphilly Athletic. The rivalry carries no history of trophies between them; it runs on geography, on clubs drawing from the same streets and the same five-a-side pitches the team itself once played on.

That is where Caerphilly Athletic started too, as Dynamo Aber, in Sunday league football and five-a-side tournaments rather than anything resembling a league club. The turn came in 2013-14, when Dynamo Aber won the Taff Ely & Rhymney Valley Alliance League and earned promotion into the South Wales Amateur League. The club took its current name in 2017. Luke Ganderton has been part of the climb since, first as a player and later as manager.

The rise kept going in stages: the South Wales Alliance Division One title in 2022-23, a runner-up finish in the Premier League the following season, then the Ardal South East championship in 2025-26, promotion into Cymru South. The Welsh Cup run has stopped at the third round, reached in 2023-24; this season the club also went to the final of the Ardal South Cup and finished second. Home games are played at the Centre of Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach, a 500-seat ground that replaced the old pitch at Morgan Jones Park back in Caerphilly.

The A's now prepare for Cymru South, a division above anything the club has played in before.
