Connor Bedard wore the Steel colours before anyone outside Illinois had heard the name.

None of that was the plan in 1996, when the team started out in Fargo-Moorhead as the Ice Sharks. The move to Illinois in 2000 brought the Steel name and, eventually, a home at the Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva, a rink that holds around 3,500 and served the club for most of its Chicago years. From the 2026–27 season the team moves again, into the USG Arena at the expanded Blackhawks Ice Center — a smaller building, seating about 2,000, but one that puts the junior side inside the same operation as the NHL club that now owns it. The Wirtz Corporation bought the Steel in August 2023, having previously belonged to Larry Robbins since 2015.

On the ice, the club has twice finished a season as USHL regular-season champions, taking the Anderson Cup in 2019–20 and again in 2020–21, and has lifted the Clark Cup, the league's playoff trophy, in 2017 and 2021 — the second of those coming in the same season as the Anderson Cup, a double not every USHL side manages.

The rivalry that matters most to Chicago runs west, against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, a fixture with no shared nickname but a long enough history in the standings that neither side needs one.
