Before Cedar Rapids had a team, Mason City did. The franchise began in 1983 as the North Iowa Huskies, and in 1999 it moved to Cedar Rapids. The new name came from a contest, and a local teacher won it: RoughRiders.

In 2004–05 the RoughRiders shared the Anderson Cup, awarded for the best regular season in the United States Hockey League (USHL), with the Omaha Lancers. They then beat the Sioux City Musketeers in the Clark Cup final. Goaltender Alex Stalock was named most valuable player of that series and later reached the NHL. It remains the club's only Clark Cup. The Anderson Cup came back in 2010–11 and 2015–16.

Mark Carlson has been in charge since the team arrived in Cedar Rapids, as head coach and general manager. In 2025 he set the league record for career wins, 779. Teddy Purcell, Justin Abdelkader and Alec Martinez all passed through the club on their way to the NHL.

The 2020–21 season was lost. The August 10 derecho storm damaged the ImOn Ice Arena, and the club suspended operations for the year rather than play elsewhere. The building holds 3,850 and was known as the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena before it took its current name. The nearest rivalry is with the Waterloo Black Hawks, and the two clubs play for the Corridor Cup.
