The franchise dropped its first puck on 20 October 1972, in a United States Hockey League that was then a senior circuit rather than the junior league it later became. Gary Lipshutz ran the club through its first eight years before ownership passed to Lyle Bradley, then to Ted and Mary Jo Carlson, who held it for nearly two decades.

Four Clark Cups mark the franchise's history, in 1982, 1986, 2002 and 2022. Three Anderson Cups for the best regular-season record came in 1982, 1986 and 2017. Players who passed through Sioux City on their way to the NHL include Jake Guentzel and Brock Boeser.
