Nothing on the schedule carries the weight of a night against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, the arch-rival across the United States Hockey League table, and the same stretch of games ropes in the Dubuque Fighting Saints and the Des Moines Buccaneers through the Dupaco Cowbell Cup, a four-team competition run alongside the regular season. Dubuque matters for a second reason: it is where the original Waterloo franchise ended up when it pulled out of town in 1980 and became the Fighting Saints.

What replaced it in Waterloo was a relocated club, the Hennepin Nordiques, brought in that same year and renamed the Black Hawks. The senior side that carried the name before the move had already stacked up USHL titles through the 1960s, taking the championship in five straight years between 1964 and 1968.

Joe Pavelski played for Waterloo in that 2003–04 championship season before going on to an NHL career, one name among a long list of alumni the club has sent to the league, and Matt Smaby, himself a former NHL defenceman, later returned to Waterloo behind the bench as head coach.

Young Arena, where the Black Hawks play, holds close to 3,000. The name traces back to 1962, when a semi-professional senior team of the same era first wore it, four years before it briefly gave way to the Iowa Stars and a stint feeding players to the Minnesota North Stars.
