Thomas Vanek arrived in Sioux Falls in 1999, the franchise's first season, and by the time he left in 2002 he had put up 91 points in a single year, a club record that still stands. In 2014 the Stampede retired his number, the first time the team had done that for anyone.

The Stampede began play that September against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, the franchise having been awarded the year before, and settled in South Dakota without ever relocating or changing its name since. They compete in the United States Hockey League, where the closest, sharpest games come against the Sioux City Musketeers.

Black and gold carry the team, worn in front of a crowd known simply as the Herd, and Sioux Falls has filled the building often enough to hold the league's single-season attendance record. The Clark Cup, the USHL's playoff championship, has come to Sioux Falls four times — 2007, 2015, 2019, and most recently 2026, when they ran Muskegon down in double overtime to take it. The regular season has been kinder just once, an Anderson Cup in 2005-06.
