Middleton, just outside Madison, built its hockey identity around Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena, and it is there that the Madison Capitols have played since taking the ice for the 2014–15 season. The name carries weight in Wisconsin hockey beyond that starting point: an earlier club also called the Madison Capitols skated in the USHL from 1984 to 1995 before becoming the Wisconsin Capitols, and the current franchise, launched by Madtown Hockey, LLC in November 2013, is a separate entity built from scratch rather than a continuation.

The Capitols compete in the United States Hockey League against Green Bay, and games between the two are known locally as the Badger State Derby. A Clark Cup has not come to Middleton.

The clearest measure of what the program has produced is Brian Rafalski, who came through the Capitols system on his way to an NHL career that included three Stanley Cups and an Olympic silver medal. More recent alumni have kept that pipeline moving: Quinn Finley left for the professional ranks after winning gold at the 2024 World Junior Championship. Luke Strand now runs the operation as head coach and general manager, a role that ties him directly to whatever the next player to leave Middleton goes on to do.

The arena seats 2,600, modest by the standards of the league's bigger markets, but it has been enough to hold a program that is still finding NHL-calibre players in a city better known for its university and its politics than for hockey.
