Hradec Králové

Josef Bican wore the black and white of Hradec Králové in 1964, a single season for a forward already regarded as one of the era's great goalscorers. The club he joined had by then passed through several identities since its founding in 1905 as the football section of a local cycling society, under the name SK Hradec Králové.

Sokol, Škoda, Spartak ZVÚ, SKP Fomei — the name changed with the decades before the club settled, in 2005, on FC Hradec Králové. It was as Spartak that the side had its finest season, winning the Czechoslovak title in 1959/60 and carrying that form into the European Cup, where the run ended at the quarter-final against Barcelona.

A domestic cup followed only once, in 1994/95. More often the club's story has been one of getting back: three times champions of the Czech second tier, in 2000/01, 2009/10 and 2020/21, each promotion earned rather than a trophy for its own sake. Runner-up finishes in the Czechoslovak Cup, in 1952 and 1961, sit further back still.

Known to their own supporters as the Votroci, the club meets FK Pardubice in a fixture carrying its own name, the Východočeské derby, the two towns separated by a short stretch of eastern Bohemia. Games are played at the FINEP Arena, previously the Malšovická aréna, where all 9,300 seats are covered.
