Kagera Sugar

The sugar comes out of the ground in Kagera region, north-west Tanzania, on the shore of Lake Victoria, and the football club carries the industry's name into the league. Kagera Sugar play out of Bukoba, the regional capital, and the tie to the mill is the plainest thing about them — it is in the name, and it explains why the club sits where it does rather than in one of the bigger cities down the road.

What the club has actually won, in black and white, is one trophy. In 2006 they took the Tusker Challenge Cup, and they took it the hard way: Simba SC in the final, 2:1, decided in extra time. Beating one of the country's two heavyweight sides for the only silverware in the cabinet is a particular kind of afternoon, and it remains the reference point for anyone asked what Kagera Sugar have done.

Before that there were leaner years spent in the lower reaches — a spell in the Tanzania Second Division, and a promotion play-off place reached in 1998 that did not turn into anything.

Home is Kaitaba Stadium in Bukoba, a ground built to a scale that matches the town rather than the ambition. Visits from Young Africans, whom Kagera Sugar meet regularly, fill it well past what the seating suggests.
