«Wana Lambalamba»
Azam FC have not missed a season in the Tanzanian Premier League since they climbed into it in 2008. Dar es Salaam calls the club Wana Lambalamba.
The club exists because the Said Salim Bakhresa flour business wanted a team for its workers. That was in 2004, under the name Mzizima. A year later Mzizima absorbed three other Bakhresa-owned sides, Kipawa, TAZARA and Vingunguti, and took the name Azam Sports Club; professional status and the current name followed in 2006.
Domestic cups have suited Azam better than the league table. The Mapinduzi Cup alone has gone to Chamazi five times, and the club has also taken the Tanzania FA Cup and, twice, the CECAFA Kagame Cup against opposition from across the region. City rivalries in Dar es Salaam run through Simba and Young Africans, whose own meetings are known as the Kariakoo Derby; Azam's matches against Simba carry the name Mzizima Derby.
Mbwana Samatta's name still attaches to the club's early years, even though his career took him elsewhere.
