Kouvot Kouvola

The story usually told about Kouvot starts with the players walking out. In 1964 the basketball section of Kouvola NMKY had briefly folded itself into a football club, Susi, before a group broke away on 3 December that year to keep the sport alive in the city under its own name.

The 1970s nearly undid it. Kouvola kept losing players to studies in Helsinki and dropped as far as the third-tier maakuntasarja before chairman Keijo Timberg steadied the operation between 1974 and 1983. A second relegation followed in 1989, and Kouvot won the second tier in 1993. They have not left the top flight since.

What followed was built largely around Risto Piipari's coaching and a core that included Jukka Toijala, whose number is retired and who won three championships with the club before going on to coach Estonia. Kouvot took the Finnish title in 1995, 1999 and 2004, then again in 2016. Four runner-up finishes and a Suomen Cup win in 1998 fill out the rest of the record.

Home games are played at MLL Areena, a ground that has changed sponsors' names more often than it has changed address. Against Kotka, twenty minutes down the road, the fixture is still called the Kymenlaakso derby.

Kouvot finished eighth in the Korisliiga regular season in 2024–25.
