Londrina Futebol Clube was founded on 5 April 1956, when local sportsmen formed the club, taking blue and white after watching Nacional of nearby Rolândia enjoy success. In 1969 it merged with Paraná Esporte Clube, founded in 1942, and the combined side switched to red and white, the city's colours. The change didn't stick: in 1972, under president Carlos Antônio Franchello, Londrina Esporte Clube went back to blue and white, and has stayed that way since.

The nickname Tubarão followed not long after, earned by the combative style the team played under president Jacy Scaff — a name that has since attached itself to the ground too, officially the Estádio Municipal Jacy Scaff.

Honours have arrived in isolated bursts rather than runs: the 1980 Série B title is the one national trophy in the club's history, alongside five Campeonato Paranaense wins — 1962, 1981, 1992, 2014 and 2021 — and the 2008 Copa Paraná. Série C finals were lost in both 2015 and 2025.

Danilo kept goal for Londrina in the early 2010s before moving on to Chapecoense, where he died in the plane crash of November 2016.
