Mathare United

Mathare United now play in the National Super League, a step down from the Kenyan Premier League they left in 2023 after 25 years in the top flight.

It grew out of the Mathare Youth Sports Association, the youth programme Bob Munro set up for children in Nairobi's Mathare slums, and the club Munro founded from it in 1994 kept the connection in its nickname, "Home of Slum Boys." Dennis Oliech, Kenya's all-time leading scorer, came through it and wore the shirt in 2002 and 2003, and Doreen Nabwire, who passed through the same system, became the first Kenyan woman to play in a top European league.

The one league title arrived in 2008, still spoken of at the club as its golden year, alongside two President's Cup wins either side of it, in 1998 and 2000.

Fixtures against KCB FC and Nairobi United FC are billed as the Nairobi Derby, with a separate rivalry running through the women's side against Kayole Starlets in the Komarock Derby.

Mathare United now play their home matches at Nyayo National Stadium, reduced to 18,000 seats after renovation work completed in 2024.
