Sydney United plays out of Edensor Park, in Sydney's south-west, on a ground still known to most as King Tomislav Park.

It began in 1958 as Sydney Croatia. A federation ruling on anglicising ethnic club names pushed it to South Sydney Croatia in 1968, and the name shifted again in 1992 to Sydney CSC before settling, in 1993, on Sydney United. In 2019 the club added "58" to its title, a way of pointing back to its founding year rather than signalling any merger — the history behind the name has run unbroken since Sydney Croatia first took the field.

The club's best-remembered trophy dates to 1987, when it beat South Melbourne to win the NSL Cup. In 2022, Sydney United reached the final of the Australia Cup and lost to Macarthur FC.

Red and white have stayed the club's colours throughout every rebranding, and the nickname Croatia has stayed with it too, long after it disappeared from the official name.
