Trnava leave Trenčín shell-shocked with four-goal rout
Spartak Trnava made light work of Trenčín on Sunday, running out 4-0 winners in the Superliga's regular season. The visitors had already looked comfortable by the half-hour mark, but they pulled away properly after the break when Trenčín's discipline began to fray. By then, the visitors had seized control of a game they had not dominated in possession.
F. Trello opened the scoring in the 36th minute, finishing a move with a cool strike that caught the home side off guard. Spartak doubled their advantage shortly after the break when T. Kudlicka found space in the box to slot home in the 59th minute. The visitors were not done yet, as J. Carrion added a third just three minutes later to leave the hosts with a mountain to climb.
And here's the thing — Trenčín had more of the ball, but Spartak were far more efficient. The visitors registered six shots on target from 11 attempts, while the hosts managed only four on target from ten. Spartak created three big chances against one for the home side, and that difference in quality told in the end.
L. Mikulaj's late dismissal complicated matters for Trenčín, picking up a second yellow card in the 90th minute after already being booked earlier in the game. E. Sabo converted a penalty in the 73rd minute to make it 4-0, but the damage had been done well before the final whistle.
The result moves Spartak Trnava up to second place with 13 points from six games, while Trenčín remain in ninth with just five points from five matches. The visitors had already shown they could go toe-to-toe with the league's best, but this performance was on another level entirely.
To be fair, Trenčín were not without their moments. They completed 435 passes compared to Spartak's 282, but many of those were circulated in their own half with little purpose. The hosts' 61 per cent possession meant nothing when they could not find a way through a disciplined Spartak defence.
What separates these two sides now is experience. Spartak have won four of six and only lost once, while Trenčín have struggled to find consistency despite beating Jednota Banova 6-0 in their previous outing. This was a match that settled the question of which team truly belongs at the top of the table.
