Yeri's Late Strike Gives Ciudad de Bolívar Vital Win
Ciudad de Bolívar edged past Defensores de Belgrano 1-0 in a tight Primera Nacional encounter on Friday evening. The result keeps the hosts in seventh place with 38 points from 27 games, while the visitors remain rooted in 17th with 26 points from 26 matches. To be fair, neither side looked particularly convincing until the dying moments, though the home side managed to get over the line when it mattered most.
The match stayed goalless for 89 minutes despite both teams registering similar numbers of attacks — 108 for the hosts, 103 for the visitors. There were no clear-cut chances on target for Defensores, who finished with zero shots on target, while Ciudad de Bolívar could only manage two. By then the tension had built, and when N. Yeri finally buried his effort in the 90th minute the stadium fell silent for the away supporters.
There were plenty of interruptions to the flow. G. Sanchez collected a yellow card in the 49th minute before A. Gonzalez went off for a booking at 60. The home side made several changes to try and break the deadlock — L. Ciccolini came on at 61, followed by K. Caraballo and G. Sanchez in the same 67th-minute double substitution. J. Ardaiz and A. Benitez then replaced two others at 76, while F. Mucignat arrived at 82.
The yellow cards kept coming throughout. J. De Tomasso and M. Rodriguez were cautioned in the 72nd and 80th minutes respectively, with A. Paredes and D. Garcia both picking up bookings as the clock hit 90. A. Gonzalez was substituted at 90+2 and took another yellow card in the same moment — a curious coincidence that underscored how the game was running out of time and patience.
The statistics tell a story of parity rather than dominance. Possession was almost split down the middle at 49-51, and both sides registered similar numbers of throw-ins and free kicks. But possession without penetration is just circulation, and Defensores failed to test their goalkeeper at all. The home side's two shots on target proved more than enough when they counted.
For Ciudad de Bolívar this is a welcome result after a difficult run. They had dropped points in their last two matches — a 1-1 draw with Racing de Córdoba and a 0-1 defeat to Agropecuario — before this win gave them something to build on. Defensores' recent form has been equally fragile, with only one victory in their last five outings against Atlético Mitre.
The gap between seventh and 17th in the table remains significant, and this result does little to close it. But for the home supporters, who have watched their team struggle for consistency, a late winner in a tight game is a result worth taking. They needed the points badly, and in the end they got them.
