Marathon Edge Past Genesis in Apertura Five Clash
Marathon secured a 2:1 victory over Genesis at 21:00 on August 29th in the fifth round of the Apertura campaign. The visitors took the lead through D. Ramirez at the interval before J. Bueso doubled their advantage shortly after. R. Sander pulled one back for the hosts but the result held firm.
Genesis started brighter, pushing forward early and earning a yellow card for J. A. Arriaga Chavez at 37 minutes. That same half saw R. Sander fire home the opener just before the break. Marathon responded immediately after the restart, with D. Ramirez finding the net at 48 minutes to turn the game on its head. Bueso added a third at 53 minutes, and by then the home side were well out of sight.
Both managers made changes throughout the second half, though the decisive moments had already passed. D. Ramirez was substituted at 52 minutes, perhaps a tactical shift rather than concern. The hosts brought on N. Messiniti at 86 minutes and C. Argueta at 90 plus four minutes as they chased the game, but Marathon kept control of the tie comfortably.
The statistics tell a story of possession without penetration. Genesis held 54 per cent of the ball and registered 116 attacks compared to Marathon's 120, yet the visitors were more clinical. Marathon produced nine shots off target alongside three on target, while Genesis managed four and four respectively. The shots don't lie — many chances went begging for the home side.
The result moves Marathon up to third place with 11 points from five games, two wins and three draws. Genesis remain seventh with seven points, their form continuing to be inconsistent. They've drawn one, won two and lost two so far this season, and this defeat extends a run that includes a loss to Real Espanyol and a win over Placense. Marathon on the other hand have shown resilience, picking up draws against Real Espanyol and Alianza while beating Atletico Choloama and Antigua GFC.
