Kalighat saw off Patha Chakra 6:1 in the Calcutta Premier Division regular season on Wednesday evening. The hosts opened the scoring through S. Ghosh in the seventh minute before the game turned. By then, Patha Chakra had already lost S. Hossain to a red card in the tenth minute, and things came to a head from there.
The visitors never got going after that early dismissal. Kalighat struck again just before the break through S. Arghya in the 45th minute plus one, then extended their advantage almost immediately. The second half belonged entirely to the home side, who kept knocking on the door and found the net repeatedly.
Goals came at 46, 54, 64 and 70 minutes, each one adding to the mounting pressure on Patha Chakra's defence. To be fair, the visitors had been exposed from the first red card, and the rest of the half played out accordingly. Kalighat's attack never stopped turning, and the scoreline told its own story.
Even with a player down, Patha Chakra tried to respond, but R. Soren picked up a second booking in the 83rd minute that left them with nothing to play for. Kalighat added a fifth goal in the 90th minute to close out what had been a one-sided affair. The result leaves the home side with 17 points from 12 games.
Patha Chakra remain rooted to 18th place with 10 points, their form continuing to worry supporters. They've lost seven of eleven matches this season, and the goal difference tells the rest of the story. By then, it was clear this wasn't going to be a competitive contest from start to finish.
For Kalighat, the win moves them up to 14th with 17 points, but they're still five games behind safety. The recent run of results — a draw against United Kolkata followed by losses — means they haven't quite found their rhythm. But beating a side at the bottom of the table is a start, even if the margin was heavier than anyone expected.
