Patha Chakra

Reading circles gave Bengal a habit of turning literary societies into sporting ones, and Pathachakra — the name itself means a reading circle — came out of that tradition in 1956. It has stayed a Kolkata club by affiliation and a travelling one in practice, attached formally to United Sports Club while entering the Calcutta Football League on its own account, neither a feeder side nor a reserve team.

The football has been played in purple, with white kept for away days. Home matches, and training with them, happen at Kalyani Municipal Stadium, a 20,000-seat ground in Kalyani, roughly 50 kilometres north of the centre of Kolkata. Few clubs in the league ask their supporters for that kind of journey; Pathachakra has made it routine, using the one venue for everything.

Its recent seasons read as a fall and a slow climb back. In 2018/19 the club finished ninth in Premier Division A and went down to Division B. Four years on it was still there, sixth in Premier Division B in 2022, a placing that neither threatened promotion nor put the club in trouble. Partha Sen has been named as coach in recent reports, working with a squad that carries the title sponsor's name — Mamoni & Aashiyana Group — in front of the club's own.

What the record does not contain is a trophy. Seventy years in and around Calcutta football have produced no league title, no IFA Shield, no Durand Cup. The club has spent most of its existence as a Premier Division regular rather than a contender, and since the drop it has been trying to get back to the division where those competitions are contested at all.
