Match report

Twelve minutes that turned a draw into something else

Newcastle United and Liverpool shared the points at St James' Park on Saturday evening, ending 2-2 in a Premier League fixture that told you more about finishing than control. Liverpool had the ball and the space, Newcastle had the moments. By then you could see the shape of it. A. Elanga opened the scoring in the fifth minute, a quick strike before Liverpool had settled into their rhythm. The visitors kept possession but couldn't find a way through. To be fair, Newcastle were organised and didn't give much away. Three yellow cards came before half-time—Y. Wissa in the 25th, then M. Kerkez and J. Frimpong together in the 30th. L. Miley added another in the 34th. The game was getting heated. C. Gakpo equalised in the 55th minute, and suddenly Liverpool were back in it. But Newcastle responded straight away. J. Willock put them ahead in the 57th, and for a moment it looked like the home side might steal something. Substitutions started coming in. W. Osula and S. Steur for Newcastle in the 56th, then F. Wirtz and R. Ngumoha for Liverpool in the 63rd. Things came to a head as the game opened up. The real story was in the final minutes. D. Szoboszlai scored from the penalty spot in the 90th minute to level things again, and then did it all over in the 90+8th minute to complete his brace. V. van Dijk picked up two yellow cards in the same minute, and L. Hornicek added another in the 90+3rd. The stadium was electric. And here's the thing about the numbers. Liverpool had 61 per cent possession, 7 shots on target against 4, and an expected goals figure of 2.98 to Newcastle's 1.58. Yet the scoreboard told a different story. Many shots, one goal each. Liverpool created chances and couldn't finish them. Newcastle were more clinical. Both sides had created three big chances each. The difference was in how they used them. Newcastle were sixth on four points after two games, Liverpool thirteenth on two. A result that might have been expected for Liverpool on paper, but not on the pitch.
