Tigres UANL secured a 2-0 victory over Atlante at Estadio Universitario on Friday evening, moving them further from the relegation zone in the Liga MX Apertura. The hosts dominated possession but had to wait until the closing stages to find the net, with R. Aguirre and J. Brunetta scoring in the final ten minutes. Atlante arrived with one more point than their hosts but left with nothing after L. Calzadilla was sent off in the first half.
The turning point came at minute 36 when Calzadilla received his second yellow card and was dismissed, leaving Atlante to play with ten men for the remainder. By then Tigres had already built pressure, though their chances were not being converted. Atlante's substitution of O. Tigres ground out the win with patience rather than flair. Aguirre broke the deadlock at 79 minutes, a goal that came after a period of sustained pressure. The visitors had created their own opportunities — expected goals figures were almost identical at 1.17 for Tigres and 1.14 for Atlante — but could not test the home goalkeeper sufficiently.
There was further drama when L. Puente missed a penalty at minute 72, a moment that kept Atlante within striking distance. Brunetta then secured the result with a goal at the 90th minute, sending the stadium into celebration. Atlante made seven substitutions in total, including three at 82 minutes, but could not find a response.
The statistics told a story of control. Tigres held 67 per cent possession and completed 611 passes compared to Atlante's 298. They registered 139 attacks against 77, and while both sides hit four shots on target, the home side created more volume overall. Atlante's red card meant they could never establish the rhythm they needed.
The result leaves Tigres in 16th place with five points from six games, still in the bottom half but with momentum building. Atlante remain 14th on six points, a gap that feels larger than the numbers suggest. Both sides have now played five matches in the Apertura, and the table tells only part of the story — these were two teams fighting for stability rather than glory.
