Vikingur Reykjavik and Fram Reykjavik played out a 2:2 draw in the Urvalsdeild on Saturday. The result keeps Vikingur top with 56 points from 23 games, while Fram stay second on 45 after 22 matches. We had backed the hosts to win, our confidence sitting at 59 per cent, but the match went another way entirely.
A. Finnbogason opened the scoring in the 30th minute before H. Asgrimsson equalised two minutes later. The visitors worked a short corner to set the goal up, and Vikingur were now chasing the game. K. McLagan restored the lead in the 53rd minute, but D. Hafsteinsson responded quickly in the 55th to level the score once more.
Things tightened up after half-time when A. Jonasson received his second yellow card in the 71st minute and was sent off. Thirteen minutes earlier, S. Tibbling and T. Thorbjornsson had been brought on together, and Vikingur changed shape at the break. By then the game had already been decided in the most dramatic fashion.
Vikingur dominated possession at 62 per cent but managed only four shots on target from eleven attempts. Fram, reduced to ten men for the final twenty minutes, registered three shots on target from ten attempts. One big chance created against zero for the hosts suggests the visitors did not waste their opportunities.
The result means Vikingur extend their lead at the top to eleven points, though Fram have a game in hand. Both sides have now dropped points in consecutive outings, ending runs that looked promising until this weekend.
