About the player
Jasper Schendelaar came up through AZ Alkmaar's academy, having started out at VAVV Alcmaria Victrix and SV De Foresters. He made 34 Eerste Divisie appearances for Jong AZ without ever making a competitive debut for the senior side, and a loan spell at SC Telstar, where he played 36 league matches, showed enough for PEC Zwolle to sign him on a free transfer.
His time at Zwolle turned into the making of him. Rather than sitting on the bench, he became the club's first-choice goalkeeper. He was central to the team's promotion push in the 2022–23 season, helping the club finish second and return straight to the Eredivisie, and he marked his top-flight return with an appearance against Sparta Rotterdam. PEC Zwolle rewarded him by triggering the option in his contract, tying him to the club into 2026 with a further year available.
It was not without a low point: in the KNVB Cup that season, an error by Schendelaar allowed NEC Nijmegen to draw level at 2–2, and PEC Zwolle went on to lose the tie 4–3 after extra time.
