About the player
Jonathan Jesus began his footballing life as a striker, only switching to defence at the age of 16. He joined Ceará's youth ranks in 2021, working his way up from the Sub-17 squad to the Sub-20 side before making his professional debut for the club in a Série B match against Atlético-GO in June 2023.
He grew into a regular starter during Ceará's 2024 Série B campaign, and a strong showing at that year's Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior raised his profile further. He was also part of the Ceará squad that won the 2024 Campeonato Cearense, beating Fortaleza on penalties in the final, though he had not been part of the senior squad the previous year, when Fortaleza took the title.
That run of form led Cruzeiro to sign him in June 2024, paying around R$8 million for 90% of his economic rights and tying him to a contract running until 2029. Since the move, his value has climbed sharply, with reports in 2026 putting it above €20 million.
