About the player
Kirkegaard came through the Vejle Boldklub academy before starting his senior career away from home, joining Kolding IF in July 2018 and making two appearances for the first team there. A move to FC Fredericia followed in July 2019, where he spent three seasons.
In June 2022 he returned to Vejle Boldklub in a deal worth around 1 million Danish kroner that also sent Adam Jakobsen the other way to Fredericia. The move paid off quickly: in the 2022/23 season Kirkegaard finished as Vejle's top scorer in the 1. Division, Denmark's second tier, with nine goals, a return that helped the club win the league and go up to the Superliga.
He stayed at Vejle until June 2025, when he signed for AC Horsens on a free transfer, agreeing a contract running to June 2027. Horsens coach David Nielsen called him a "first priority" signing. Kirkegaard had already shown he could settle scores against former clubs, netting the winner in a 1-0 win over Kolding IF, and he later struck the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory for Horsens against Hobro.
