Aluminij spent 2024–25 winning promotion out of the Slovenian Second League and then, in 2025–26, lifted the Slovenian Cup. Two earlier finals, in 2001–02 and 2017–18, had ended the other way.
The club takes its name from the aluminium plant that dominates Kidričevo. Športni park Aluminij holds 2 600, of which only 600 are seats.
For most of its existence this was a regional side. The high point of the Yugoslav years came in 1965, when Aluminij took both the Slovenian republican league and the republican cup in the same season, and nothing of that scale followed for three decades. The Third League (East) title in 1996–97 started the climb; second-tier championships in 2010–11 and 2011–12 carried the club into the top flight, where it stayed long enough to become a familiar fixture before dropping back.
The trophy the club has won most often is the smallest one — the Ptuj regional cup, taken eleven times between 1991 and 2014, a run that says more about how completely Aluminij dominated its own corner of Štajerska than any league placing does.
Red and white have been the colours throughout, which is where the second nickname, rdeče-beli, comes from.
