Four times in twelve years, América de Cali reached a Copa Libertadores final, and four times it walked away without the cup — 1985, 1986, 1987, then again in 1996. No other Colombian club has come that close to South America's biggest prize that often without ever lifting it.

The club's roots go back to 1918, when students at Colegio Santa Librada in Cali put together an amateur side they called América Football Club. Hernán Zamorano Isaacs turned that into a formal institution on 13 February 1927, though it took until 1948 for the club to turn professional.

Domestically, América has been crowned champion of Colombia 15 times, and the middle of that record stands out on its own: five titles in a row between 1982 and 1986, a run built during the same years the club kept falling short in the Libertadores. Later titles came in 1990, 1992, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2008, and, after a long gap, in 2019 and 2020.

That gap had a hard edge to it. In 2011 América dropped into the second division for the first time in its history, and the club was reorganised as a company the following year before winning the Primera B title in 2016 to come back up.

Home games are played at the Estadio Olímpico Pascual Guerrero, which holds 35,405 after work carried out for the 2011 Under-20 World Cup. The fixture that still defines the calendar in Cali, though, is against Deportivo Cali — the Clásico Vallecaucano, one of the oldest derbies in Colombian football and the one match in the city neither side plays as just another game.
