Arminia Bielefeld

German football has a name for a club like this one: Fahrstuhlmannschaft. Bielefeld earned it by going up and coming back down often enough that the movement itself became the identity. The other nicknames, Die Arminen and Die Blauen, are less distinctive.

The most recent time the rest of the country had to pay attention was 2025, in the final of the DFB-Pokal. Stuttgart won it 4:2.

Home is the SchücoArena, which older supporters still call the Alm — the pasture — a name that predates the sponsor and outlived it in ordinary speech. It holds 27,332. The blue shirt with black shorts is the version people picture; the away kit is black throughout.

Long before any of that, Arminia were a regional power. They took the Westphalian championship repeatedly through the 1910s and 1920s, and twice — in 1922 and again in 1923 — won the West German championship outright, at a time when that was as far as a club from this part of the country could reasonably go. A West German cup followed much later, in 1966.

The club was founded on 3 May 1905 as 1. Bielefelder FC Arminia, a football side in a Westphalian textile town of no particular footballing reputation. The name came from the ancient Germanic figure Arminius. Everything since has been the working out of what a club that size can do.
