It was built for a club that spent most of its existence in the second and third tiers of East German football.
The club took that name on 31 January 1966, when BSG Energie Cottbus replaced SC Cottbus, three years after the original club was set up. Red shirts and white shorts at home, the colours reversed away — that much has not moved.
What Cottbus is remembered for outside Brandenburg happened in the spring of 1997. The same year brought the Regionalliga Nordost title, and the club later won the division again in 2018, 2023 and 2024.
Four years after the cup run, by then in the Bundesliga, Cottbus named a starting eleven made up entirely of foreign players.
The youth side took the DFB-Pokal U17 in 2011.
Cottbus sits close to the Polish border, in a corner of Germany the Bundesliga rarely visits.
