The title that took Arouca out of the second tier came in 2012–13, when the club from a town in the Aveiro district finished top of the Segunda Liga. Before that run the club had won the Aveiro regional league twice, in 2002–03 and 2006–07.

Three seasons after arriving in the top flight, Arouca finished fifth. That was 2015–16, and it sent the club into European football for the first time — the Europa League the following season. Arouca returned to European competition in the Conference League in 2023–24.

The home ground, the Estádio Municipal de Arouca, holds 5,600. The fixtures against Feirense and Rio Ave carry what they carry: the derby of the Entre Douro e Vouga region has no official name.

The nicknames are Arouquenses, after the townspeople, and Lobos — the Wolves.

All of it starts on Christmas Day 1952, when Futebol Clube de Arouca was founded.
