The men who hauled those carts gave the club its second name, Carroceiros , and the district gave it the first: Alcantarenses .
The club took its present shape in 1942. Second in the top division in 1944/45, second again the season after, and in 1953/54 the Taça de Portugal , won after two earlier finals, in 1946 and 1949, had gone the other way.
What came instead was a long circuit through the lower divisions: second-tier titles in 1958/59 and 1967/68, the third tier in 2003/04 and again in 2005/06, and the Campeonato de Portugal in 2022/23.
The Estádio da Tapadinha stands in Alcântara, a few streets from where the club started. The shirts worn there are white with three vertical stripes — red, blue and yellow — the same four colours the crest carries.
