The Estádio Municipal de Mafra is where a side that spent decades in the Lisbon regional leagues ended up playing Liga Portugal 2 football.

There was a club here in 1940, disbanded before the current one was set up on 24 May 1965 in yellow and green. Even then the football section could not start until 1967, because there was no pitch to play on. What followed was slow: the third division of the Lisbon association in 1971, the second in 1976, the first in 1992. Only after that did Mafra enter the national championships at all.

The step that changed the club came in 2015. Mafra won their promotion group in the third tier, then beat Famalicão on penalties, and went into the second division of Portuguese football. A second Campeonato de Portugal title followed in 2018.

The best run since was the 2021/22 Taça de Portugal, where Mafra reached the semi-finals.

In 2023 the Danish company Heartland, part of the Bestseller group, became majority shareholder.
