Atlético El Vigía

The stadium in El Vigía carries the name of the man who founded the club and coached its first side. Ramón Hernández, known to everyone as El Gato, gathered a group of local traders and sports enthusiasts on 13 August 1987 and took the team to its first promotion. The ground that bears his name holds 12,765.

What followed was a club that could not keep a name. Atlético El Vigía became El Vigía Fútbol Club in 1993, the year it first won the Segunda División. In 1998 it left the town altogether, moved to Barquisimeto and played a season as Internacional de Lara. It came back the following year as Unión Atlético El Vigía, and for sixteen years after 2000 the two names ran in parallel, depending on who was filling in the paperwork. Since 2017 the registered title has been Fundación Atlético El Vigía Fútbol Club. The supporters' group kept one thing steady through all of it: Auriverde Resistance, after the yellow shirt with green trim.

The second-tier title came twice more, in 2003 and 2007. There is nothing above that — no top-flight championship, no Venezuelan Cup.

Orlando Rengifo is the name the town returns to. Rafael Dudamel passed through as well, before the goalkeeping career that took him elsewhere.

Norman Cabrera scored 22 goals for the club and finished the 2009/10 season as the leading scorer in the Venezuelan first division with 20. Julián Pino matched the 22 in a single Segunda División campaign in 2016, top of that division's charts.

Gustavo Romatello holds the job in 2026; Imad Maaz is president. The official website has been down for years, and the last archived copy of it dates from 2007 — the club is easier to find on a fixture list than online.

Its address, though, has barely moved in four decades: the same town, and a ground named for the shopkeepers' coach who started it.
