Boys from Calle Mendoza, who called themselves the Leones, took on the boys from Calle Mitre, the Tigres.
It was formally founded on 2 April 1907, in a house at Calle Mitre 167.
Provincial football is where Mitre has made its name: 35 titles in the Liga Santiagueña across the professional era.
The step that changed its status came in 2016-17. Mitre won the Torneo Federal A and took the second promotion place on penalties against Gimnasia de Mendoza, going up to Primera Nacional for the first time.
The fixture that matters most locally is the Clásico Santiagueño, against Central Córdoba, with Güemes contesting the other side of what is now the city's main derby.
