San Miguel de Tucumán had football clubs before Atlético Tucumán came along, but none of them are still standing. Founded on 27 September 1902, it has outlasted every rival in Tucumán province and across the whole Northwest Argentina region, which is why it carries the nickname El Decano — the Dean. Supporters also call it El Gigante del Norte. Home games are played at the Estadio Monumental José Fierro, opened in 1922 and holding 35,200 people.

The closest thing to a golden season came in 1959–60, when the club won the Copa de Campeones de la República Argentina. The title spent decades outside the official record books before the Argentine Football Association recognised it in October 2024 as a full Primera División championship. The achievement did not pay the bills: financial trouble forced the club to sell almost the entire squad to Buenos Aires clubs soon after.

Harder years arrived later. Atlético Tucumán was relegated from the top flight for the first time in 2002, spent six seasons in the third-tier Torneo Argentino A, and only returned in 2009 by winning the Primera B Nacional. A second relegation followed within a year, and it took until 2015, and another Primera B Nacional title, to get back for good. The club reached the Copa Libertadores group stage for the first time in its history, beating El Nacional in Quito on a goal from Fernando Zampedri.

Santiago Michal is still the name attached to the club's scoring record, with somewhere around 210 goals through the 1930s and 1940s. Zampedri, captain when the Libertadores breakthrough came, and Luis Miguel "Pulga" Rodríguez, who helped the club up a division four separate times, are the two names that come up when the talk turns to who mattered most in between. These days the club's business is the Liga Profesional Argentina and the Copa Argentina.
