Bavois

The Stade des Peupliers holds around a thousand people, a modest ground that matches a club run mostly on donated labour: members have put somewhere between 7,000 and 15,000 hours into building and maintaining it themselves. Bavois plays in red at home, white away, and operates on a first-team budget of roughly 350,000 Swiss francs — figures that place it firmly among Switzerland's amateur ranks even though the first team competes in the 1. Liga Promotion, the country's third tier.

The village of Bavois, in the canton of Vaud, gave the club its name when it was founded in 1941. President Jean-Michel Vicquerat has spoken of the club's role beyond the pitch, helping players find work locally — a detail that says more about what FC Bavois is than any list of results could.

Silverware has been rare. The Coupe vaudoise, won not long after the club's founding, in 1948, remains its clearest triumph. The Coupe de Suisse has occasionally brought Bavois into sharper focus: in the 2019/20 campaign the team reached the quarter-finals before losing to FC Winterthur, having got there by putting fourteen goals past FC Escholzmatt-Marbach without reply and then getting past Olympique de Genève. A decade earlier, in 2010/11, the run ended in the first round, beaten 3-1 by FC Aarau.

What Bavois has not done is turn those cup runs into anything higher up the pyramid. A single regional trophy from the 1940s and one Swiss Cup quarter-final are still the high-water marks for a club whose ground, budget and volunteer hours all point to a team built to stay level with itself rather than climb.
