Bergantiños

As Eiroas sits in Carballo with room for 3,500, the Campo Municipal earned wider notice on 15 December 2021, when Rayo Vallecano came to town for the Copa del Rey. A fourth-tier side hosting a La Liga club draws a crowd, and the visitors needed three goals, from Mario Suárez, Pathé Ciss and Sergio Moreno, to see off a team that answered through Cano.

The club has carried the nickname Berga since 1923, playing in blue and garnet. Before that, in 1985, Preferente Galicia glory sent them up to Segunda División B for the first time, a level they reached again in 2021–22 before returning a year later through the Tercera Federación. Two Copa Galicia wins, in 1969 and 1985, round out a run of honours that has stayed regional rather than national.

None of it has ever meant more locally than the meetings with CCD Cerceda. The two clubs share the Costa da Morte, and their fixture is known simply as the Derby da Costa da Morte.

What the club has not produced is a recognised name to point to afterwards. The closest link, Álex Bergantiños, who played for Deportivo de La Coruña, never wore the first-team shirt in Carballo, a coincidence of surname rather than a connection. The story stays where it started, at As Eiroas.
