On 24 May 2023, in the round of 16 of the US Open Cup, Legion beat Charlotte FC 1-0. The run went on to the quarter-finals, where Inter Miami CF ended it in front of 18,418 spectators.

The franchise was awarded by the United Soccer League on 9 August 2017, with play to begin in 2019. Birmingham had a lower-league side before that, the Birmingham Hammers, and the two are sometimes conflated; Birmingham Legion FC dates from 2017.

The Three Sparks nickname arrived the way modern nicknames tend to — supporters used it on Twitter, and the club adopted it afterwards.

Its capacity is 47,100. The Inter Miami quarter-final, the best-attended match in the club's history, filled a little over a third of it.

Playing in black and gold, Legion have reached the USL Championship play-offs repeatedly: semi-finals in 2021 and 2023, a quarter-final in 2022.

The ownership group has picked up recognisable names.
