Chaco Petrolero no longer belongs to Bolivia's top flight, and its home ground tells much of that story on its own: a club that once filled the Estadio Hernando Siles in La Paz for continental football now plays in front of 3,500 people at the Complejo Deportivo Ciudad Satélite in El Alto.

The gap between those two grounds marks the distance the club has travelled since 1970, the year it won the Bolivian Primera División and earned the right to enter the Copa Libertadores. In the 1971 edition Chaco Petrolero beat The Strongest 3-1, a result that still carries weight. The club reached the first round of the Libertadores again in 1972, then settled into a longer life at regional and second-tier level, adding the Copa Simón Bolívar in 1995 and nine Campeonato Paceño titles along the way.

Founded in 1944, the club has worn white and green since 1954, after starting out in red and blue and passing through grey and red before settling on the colours associated with it now.

Ramiro Portugal is the name most often attached to the club's better years. Playing as the number 10 through the early 1980s, he became Chaco Petrolero's record scorer with 35 goals and had already won gold with Bolivia at the 1977 Bolivarian Games, a level of pedigree the club rarely got to keep on its own books for long.
