Diomidis Argous

Argos already had a multi-sport club, Athlitikós Ómilos Diomidis Argous, when a handball department was set up under its banner in 1984. The wolf on the crest, crowned as the mythical king of the city, gave the team its nickname, Wolves, and the green and white stripes their meaning.

The wait for a European final ended in 2011–12, when Diomidis Argous met the Swiss club Wacker Thun for the EHF Challenge Cup: a 26–23 win at home in the first leg, then a 20–22 defeat away, enough on aggregate, 46–45, to take the trophy back to Argos. No Greek handball club had won a European title before that night. The club topped the Greek A1 Ethniki, a title it added again in 2013–14, either side of three runner-up finishes in the years that followed. A Greek Cup final in 2013–14 went the other way, an 18–16 loss to AEK; a second final, in 2019–20, never got played out, cancelled with the pandemic.

Dimitris Dimitroulias was the coach who took the club through that 2012 campaign, working with a squad that included Charalampos Mallios and Georgios Zaravinas among the names still associated with the Challenge Cup run. The Nea Kios Indoor Sports Hall, home to the club since, holds 600.
