Donau Klagenfurt

The DonauArena on Kneippgasse holds a thousand people, small enough that the club has never needed anything grander for what it does. SV Donau Klagenfurt plays in the amateur tiers, and in 2023/24 that meant the Regionalliga Süd, the third division, reached on the back of the Kärntner Liga title won in 2022/23 and, before that, the Unterliga Ost crown in 2020/21.

The club carries the name of the river for a reason. It was founded in 1952 by Donauschwaben, ethnic Germans who had settled along the Danube in south-eastern Europe and resettled in Carinthia after the war, and the full name still reads Sportverein Donau Klagenfurt – St. Ruprecht. What began as a way for displaced families to find their footing in a new city has become something else: a squad now drawing players from more than 30 countries, work that earned the club Carinthia's Integration Prize in 2022 and, two years later, the province's Panathlon award for its youth programme.

Rivalry in Klagenfurt runs along its own streets rather than across the country. SV Donau's fixtures against SAK Klagenfurt are known locally as the Klagenfurter Stadtderby, and it is that meeting, more than any other on the calendar, that decides bragging rights within the city.
