Seventh place in China League One, in a first season at that level, is where Dongguan United stood at the end of 2023. In December of that year the club was renamed Foshan Nanshi , 佛山南狮, the Southern Lion.
From the 2023 season the club had already shifted its matches west to Foshan, to the Nanhai Sports Center Stadium. That ground, the Dongguan Sports Center Stadium, went up in 1994 and holds 22,191.
What came before was quicker than the renaming suggests. The club was founded on 19 October 2016 as Dongguan Machong Rongyi. Under the name Guangdong Lianghetang it won the Chinese Champions League in 2020 and went up to China League Two. Two seasons there — 2021 and 2022 — and it went up again.
Playing in blue at home, white away, the club found its rivals close by. The Dongguan–Guangzhou derby against Guangzhou FC is the one carrying a name of its own, 莞穗德比; the Guangdong derby, against Guangzhou Leopard, sets two provincial sides against each other. Both are short trips.
