The 2015 China League Two title was the first thing the club won: promotion out of the third tier under Qi Wusheng. It had been renamed Meizhou Wuhua for the 2014 and 2015 seasons, after Wuhua County, where it plays; the present name came back in 2016.

The club was put together in January 2013 by Cao Yang, previously in charge of Guangdong Sunray Cave, with money from the Meizhou municipal government.

Second place in China League One in 2021 took the club into the Chinese Super League for the first time. The 2025 season ended with a finish of 15th out of 16 and a return to China League One.

He took the side up in 2021, stayed through the Super League years to 2024, came back briefly that same year, and left in 2025.
