FC Aarau

The men who put the club together on 26 May 1902 worked at the local brewery, and for two decades the team played at Schachen. The move to Stadion Brügglifeld came on 12 October 1924 , and Aarau have not left it since — a ground that now holds 9,249.

The two league titles that arrived early, in 1911–12 and 1913–14. What the club is actually remembered for came later. Ottmar Hitzfeld took charge in 1984 and won the Swiss Cup in his first full season. The club had lost two finals before that, in 1929–30 and 1988–89.

Then came 1992–93. Rolf Fringer , appointed in 1992, won the championship at the end of his first season.

The fall from that came slowly. The most recent trophy is the Challenge League title of 2012–13, which returned Aarau to the top division for a single season. Since then the club has been a second-tier side, and the organised support — Szene Aarau , formed in 2008 — has grown up entirely on promotion football rather than on the top flight.
