Youth work at the club was put on a formal footing in 1989, more than a century after the senior side began life as SC Germania in 1887 and took its present name in 1919.

The register of players who came through instead does the arguing. Uwe Seeler and Horst Hrubesch belong to the older part of it; the more recent entries scattered across Europe include Jonas David, Fábio Baldé and Stephan Ambrosius. Son Heung-min spent part of his teens here before leaving Germany's north entirely. Fiete Arp, handed a debut in the senior side while still of academy age, became the first player born in the 2000s to score in the Bundesliga.

Against St. Pauli the fixture keeps the name it has at every level in the city, the Hamburg derby, and the 500 places at Kura 2 are the whole of what the ground can offer for it.
