In 2011, Hapoel Petah Tikva went bankrupt. In 2018, it happened again. By 2019, the fans who had watched the club slide from champions to insolvent had had enough of waiting for a benefactor to fix things.
The turnaround owed something to memory as much as money.
Shmuel Rosenthal left Petah Tikva for Borussia Mönchengladbach and became the first Israeli to play in the Bundesliga, going on to the 1968 Olympics and the 1970 World Cup with the national side.
Hapoel Petah Tikva still play at HaMoshava, known these days as the Shlomo Insurance Stadium, a ground holding 11,500 in the city that gave the club its name.
