Kristianstad sits in the handball heartland of Skåne. That break came on 15 June 2005, when the youth wing split away from IFK Kristianstad to stand on its own as Kristianstad HK.

The team plays in orange rather than the parent club's blue and white, a kit that gave it the nickname Brandgula, and it carries that identity into Kristianstad Arena. No Swedish championship or cup sits in the club's history, but the recent seasons have brought the side within one match of a first cup medal three times running, reaching the Final Four in 2023/2024, 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 and losing the bronze match on each occasion.

Sarah Carlström's name carries the club's scoring record, 480 goals in the Swedish league. The rivalry with HK Malmö borrows its name from the men's fixture, Slaget om Skåne, and the label has followed the women's meetings between the two clubs as the contest for the region has come to matter on both sides of the game.
