Kroppskultur Dam Women

Before handball there was gymnastics. Gymnastikföreningen Kroppskultur, the gymnastics association in Uddevalla, was set up on 31 March 1920. Its handball section followed on 27 September 1934, and the women's team from that section is the one that carries the name GFK today.

The club's history turns on 2005, when bankruptcy split it. For seven years the women played as HF Kroppskultur Dam, separate from the parent body, and they only rejoined it in 2012. The team reached the top-flight Elitserien in 2008/2009. After a season away it won its way back in 2010 by beating IF Hellton in the qualification matches that followed the Allsvenskan. It stayed up for 2010/2011 and 2011/2012, but lost the qualifiers against Tumba at the end of that second season and went down.

The players it produced have gone further than the team itself. Left back Jenny Alm, who won 123 caps for Sweden and a bronze medal at the 2014 European Championship, started her career here. So did goalkeeper Johanna Bundsen, who has won World and European titles with the national side. Goalkeeper Jessica Aronsson also played for the club and won nine caps for Sweden.

At home, the team shares Agnebergshallen, which holds 2,400, with Uddevalla HK, and the meetings between the two are the city derby. Further afield the reference points are HK Varberg and HK Aranäs, the other big handball sides in Bohuslän and Halland.

The women's senior team has never won a Swedish championship or the Svenska Cupen, and it has not been back in the Elitserien since Tumba beat it in 2012.
