After their 31st league title, sealed in 2025 under Oscar Ramirez, the count of championships sits well clear of any rival in the country. Ramirez took the dugout and delivered the record within a season.

The club traces back to 18 June 1919, when a group of friends who had played for Electra and Once de Abril decided to form their own side in Alajuela. What they built has since carried Costa Rican colours further than most: two CONCACAF Champions Cups, in 1986 and 2004, and the CONCACAF League in 2020.

Alejandro Morera Soto belongs to the club's early legend. Roland Fonseca is remembered differently, as the scorer who did more with the national team shirt than anyone before him. Keylor Navas came through the same red-and-black system before his career carried him to Europe.

Deportivo Saprissa remains the fixture that overrides form and table alike — Costa Ricans call it the Clasico Nacional, and neither side needs reminding what a defeat means locally. Herediano and Cartagines fill in the rest of a rivalry list that keeps the domestic calendar sharp.

Games are still played at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto, a ground known simply as La Catedral, holding 17,895 inside Alajuela — a city that has watched this club collect more league titles than any other in the country's history.
